Dr. William “Bill” P. Marchione, Jr., age 84, of Smyrna, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 12, 1942, to the late Mary A. Salvucci and the late William F. Marchione.
He is preceded in death by both parents and his brother, Robert L. Marchione, of New Hampshire.
Bill leaves behind his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Ann Cuggino Marchione, of Smyrna, Georgia; son, David Marchione (Tracey), of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter, Karen Marchione (Sean Glowaski), of Smyrna, Georgia; and grandson, Sam Glowaski, of Smyrna, Georgia.
Bill earned his undergraduate degree from Boston University, where he met Mary Ann. He went on to earn a master’s degree in history from George Washington University and a PhD in history from Boston College.
Bill was a lifelong educator, historian, lecturer, and active community member, both in his native Boston and more recently in Smyrna, Georgia.
He spent more than 35 years as a middle school teacher in Norwell, Massachusetts, shaping generations of students, and also taught as an adjunct professor at the college level.
Bill was a devoted historian throughout his life. He was widely known as the local historian of Brighton, Massachusetts, for many years, and authored several books on Boston history. After moving to Atlanta in 2010, he brought that same passion to his adopted home, taking on a major role in preserving and documenting Smyrna’s history. It was more than a pastime for him. It was his favorite pursuit and a defining part of who he was.
A celebration of life will be held in Brighton, MA and Smyrna, GA.
